Your questions, answered
It's natural to have questions when considering counselling. I believe in providing clarity and reassurance, helping you feel comfortable and ready to take that first step. Here, I address some of the most common queries about my services and approach at Birds of a Feather Counselling and Psychotherapy.
What is counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy provide a confidential, supportive space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences that may be causing distress or difficulty. Working with a trained therapist can help you gain insight, develop coping strategies, and make sense of challenges in your life at your own pace.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Many people seek therapy during times of stress, change, or emotional overwhelm, while others attend to better understand themselves or improve relationships. If something in your life feels difficult or unresolved, counselling may be helpful.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity to get to know each other and discuss what brings you to therapy. Your therapist will explain how counselling works, answer any questions you may have, and explore what you’d like to focus on. There’s no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.
Is everything I say confidential?
Confidentiality is a core part of therapy. What you share in sessions is kept private, with only rare exceptions where there is a legal or ethical obligation to act to protect you or others. These limits to confidentiality will be clearly explained at the beginning of therapy.
How long does counselling last?
The length of counselling varies depending on your needs and goals. Some people attend for a short period to work through a specific issue, while others choose longer-term support. This can be discussed and reviewed together as therapy progresses.
Do you offer online or remote sessions?
Yes, alongside in-person sessions at our Kilcoole location, I also offer secure online counselling via video call. This provides flexibility and accessibility for clients who may prefer or require remote support from the comfort of their own space. Please contact us to discuss online session availability.
What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?
It’s completely normal to feel nervous about reaching out. Many people feel unsure before their first session. Your therapist will work to create a welcoming, respectful environment where you can move at a pace that feels right for you.
Where are you located?
